Lewis Mountain Neighborhood
The Lewis Mountain neighborhood is characterized by mature landscape, unique architecture, and charming, meandering lanes. University of Virginia professors and administrators settled the neighborhood, and a significant portion of the residents continue to be associated with the University.
Lewis Mountain is almost completely surrounded by the University, and the proximity of this large and growing institution is the primary land-use and planning issue for the neighborhood. At the north edge is a commercial district, which includes some neighborhood amenities such as a grocery store and several restaurants. Other than the commercial district and major facilities, the neighborhood primarily consists of single-family residential homes.
Most of the current land area was annexed in 1938. The Cavalier Inn property was purchased by The University of Virginia Real Estate Foundation in 1998. This site is slated to become the location of a future Performing Arts Center for the University.
